Personal Change Management
Human psychological and physical nature means that we tend to resist change, but we are human – very adaptable creatures. With the right support through the change process, we can adapt successfully.
Managing personal change requires an understanding of the individual’s perception of change and what they need for a successful transition. This requires knowledge of what message people need, when and from whom, when is the optimal time to learn new skills, how to prepare people to demonstrate new behaviours and what enables change to take hold in an individual’s work.
The discipline of personal change management draws on disciplines such as psychology and neuroscience to define the framework for personal change.
Based on years of research into how individuals experience change and how are affected during change, Prosci® has developed the ADKAR® model of personal change. Today, is one of the most widely used change management models in the world.
Managing organisational change
While change happens on a personal level, it is usually impossible for a project team to manage change on an individual level with each person. Organisational change management offers us steps and activities at project level that can support hundreds or thousands of individuals affected by the project and therefore by the change.
Managing organisational change involves identifying the groups and individuals who need to change as a result of the project and how. The next step involves the development of a tailored plan to support employees, including building the understanding or awareness, guidance, coaching and training that employees need to successfully adapt to the change. The main purpose and goal of organisational change management activities is the successful individual transformation of individuals.
Managing organisational change is complementary to managing the organisation’s projects. Project management ensures that solutions are designed, developed and implemented, while change management ensures that new solutions are adopted and put into regular use.
Ability to manage change in the company
Enterprise change management is a core organisational competency that ensures competitive advantage and the ability to adapt effectively to an ever-changing marketplace. Enterprise change management capability is the integration of effective change management into organisational roles, structures, projects and leadership. The change management process is continuously integrated into initiatives, managers have the skills to lead their teams through change and employees know what issues are important for ultimate success.
The end result of a company’s ability to manage change is faster adoption of innovations and adaptation of employees to new strategic orientations and technologies, without intermediate drops in performance. This ability is not a given. Building it requires a strategic approach to the introduction of change management at enterprise-wide level.
